The NYSDMV maintains statistical data about motor vehicle accidents, vehicle registrations and drivers.
The accident data are compiled from the accident reports submitted to the NYSDMV by motorists and police agencies. The accident data are released after a complete calendar year is compiled. The data for the year 2006 are the most current available.
Some of the other information, for example, the numbers for population and vehicle miles traveled, is collected from other government agencies.
NOTE: It is important to note that the data for 2006 are not strictly comparable to the data for previous years. Changes in data collection and reporting that began during 2006 with respect to property damage crashes have increased the total number of crashes; the changes resulted in more property damage crashes being captured in the statewide Accident Information System (AIS) maintained by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles.
