A Road Test

If your road test was cancelled due to weather

On the day of your road test:

Make sure your bring your photo learner permit. If you have an interim or temporary learner permit without a photo, you must also show a NYS photo driver license or a NYS non-driver photo ID card.  Photo documents from other states are not acceptable.

Also make sure you bring your form MV-278 (Pre-licensing Course Completion Certificate) or MV-285 (Student Certificate of Completion), unless the test is to amend your current NYS driver license to add or change the class of a current driver license. For example, a certificate is not required to add a motorcycle (M) class or to change to a commercial driver license (CDL) class.

IMPORTANT
For commercial driver license (CDL) road tests conducted on or after September 1, 2006:
  • On and after September 1, 2006, the NYSDMV cannot issue a 10-day temporary CDL when you pass a CDL skills (road) test.
  • Federal regulations require the NYSDMV to check both the National Driver Register and the Commercial Driver License Information System before the NYSDMV can issue a CDL.
  • If you pass a CDL skills test on or after September 1, 2006, you must wait at least seven days after the skills test, then go to a DMV office to amend your driver license to a CDL.  Until your CDL is issued, you continue to hold only a CDL permit, and must comply with all restrictions and limitations of the permit.

If you plan to apply for a NYS commercial driver license (CDL):

It is important that you read the information about the changes for CDL drivers.

If you got your learner permit after September 1, 2003:

If you have a Class DJ or MJ learner permit, you must bring form MV-262 (Certification of 20 Hours of Driving Experience) unless you are 17 years of age and have an MV-285 (Student Certificate of Completion).

For motorcycle license applicants:

NYS law defines a motorcycle as a motor vehicle that has no more than three wheels in contact with the ground. The examiner will not conduct the test if the vehicle has more than three wheels in contact with the ground.
