FAQs about the Requirements and the Restrictions for this Transaction:

Can I use this on-line transaction if I changed my mailing address?

No. Your mailing address on file with the DMV must be your current mailing address.

You cannot:

If you change your address during a driver license/ID transaction the change does not affect the address on your vehicle registration records.

If you file a request with the US Postal Service (USPS) to forward mail, there is no guarantee that the USPS will forward all DMV documents to the new address.

If the DMV does not have your current mailing address on your DMV records, read the instructions to change your address on DMV documents.

Can I use this on-line transaction if I changed my name?

Yes, but the new document will then display your previous name. You cannot change your name during this transaction. If you recently changed your name, read the instructions to change your name on DMV documents and DMV records.

I did not receive a renewal notice in the mail. Can I renew my registration on-line?

If the reason you did not receive a renewal notice is because of a mail delivery problem or a production problem at the DMV, you can normally renew on-line. You cannot renew your registration on-line if the reason you did not receive a renewal notice is:

The transaction displays an error message if your registration is not eligible to be renewed or cannot be renewed on-line.

Can I renew on-line if my registration has expired or will expire during the next two weeks?

Yes, you can renew on-line, but there is no guarantee that you will receive your new registration documents before your current registration expires. You cannot operate your vehicle with an expired registration.

When your on-line registration renewal is processed, the DMV records will show that the registration was renewed, but you will not have the documents that prove that your registration is valid. The confirmation messages that you receive on-line and by e-mail are not legal proof that your registration is valid. You must receive the registration documents that are the proof of a valid registration.

To receive your registration documents immediately, you can renew your registration at a DMV office.

Can I renew my vehicle registration early?
Why do I receive an error message that informs me that I cannot renew early?

You can renew your vehicle registration a maximum of 60 days before the expiration date. You cannot renew your registration more than 60 days before the expiration date; you will receive an error message that explains that you cannot renew early.

You can also receive the error message that it is too early to renew your registration if you click your mouse cursor on the button that displays the words "Submit My Order" more than one time during the on-line renewal transaction. Click on the button only one time.

What are the Empire Gold Plate and Same Number options?

New York State recently introduced new Empire Gold plates.

Can I renew my trailer registration later in the year?

Yes. Trailer registrations are valid for one year and expire on December 31. If you will not begin to use your trailer until after December 31, you can renew the registration on a later date, but the expiration date of the renewed registration will be December 31. The pro-rated registration fee you pay is a lower fee. The amount of the fee depends on the date that the DMV processes your renewal.

FAQs about Hours, Payment, and Other Questions about this Transaction:

How long will it take to receive my new documents?
Can I have my document sent via an express mail service?

Allow at least two weeks to receive your new documents by mail. Express mail delivery service is not available.

What are the hours for this on-line transaction?

This transaction is normally available 24 hours each day.

The DMV normally processes on-line transactions immediately. If the DMV cannot immediately process your transaction, you will receive a confirmation that the DMV "received" the information that you entered. The DMV will process your transaction on the next business day, and will send an e-mail message to confirm your transaction was processed.

Does the DMV charge an added fee to use this on-line transaction?

There is no additional cost or fee to use this on-line transaction. You pay the same fees that you would pay if you did the same transaction by mail or at a DMV office.

How do I pay for this on-line transaction?

You must use a credit card or a debit card to pay for this transaction on-line. The DMV accepts these credit cards:

American Express Card Discover Card MasterCard VISA Card

You can use a debit card if the debit card was issued by MasterCard® or VISA® and the card does not require a personal identification number (PIN).

Is this on-line transaction secure? How does the DMV protect my personal information?

The DMV uses secure socket layering (SSL) to protect your information. The DMV encrypts your credit card information and your personal information so other Internet users cannot read the information. Read the DMV Privacy and Security Statement.

How will I know the amount that the DMV charged to my credit card?

The on-line transaction shows you the amount of your payment before you submit your payment. If you do not submit your payment, the DMV will not charge the amount to your credit card.

After the DMV processes your payment, you will see the amount of the payment in the confirmation messages from the DMV and on your credit card statement.

Why do I need a Confirmation Number?
How will I know if the DMV processed my transaction?
Will I receive a receipt or other proof that the DMV processed my transaction?

You will need your confirmation number if you contact the DMV about your on-line transaction. After you select the button to submit your payment, a confirmation message will appear in your browser window. The confirmation message contains your Confirmation Number and other information about your transaction.

The confirmation message can take several seconds to appear. If the message does not appear immediately, do not select the button to submit your payment again. If you select the button more than one time, you can receive an error message.

When the confirmation message appears in your browser window, write your Confirmation Number on a piece of paper. Do not try to print or to reload the web page in your browser window. Some browsers will erase the information from the web page if you try to print or to reload the page, and you can lose your transaction information.

When you receive a confirmation message that your order was processed (not "received") the DMV registration records immediately show that your registration was renewed. The document that you will receive in the mail from the DMV is the only legal proof of a valid registration. You can show the confirmation page or the e-mail confirmation message for your order to a law enforcement officer, but they are not legal proof that your vehicle registration is valid.

After you submit your payment, you will receive an e-mail message that includes your Confirmation Number.

Can I cancel this on-line transaction?

No. You cannot cancel this on-line transaction after you submit your payment. If you want a refund of the renewal fees for a registration you will not use, see the registration refund information.
