Questions... about on-line duplicate registration.

Which types of vehicles are eligible for an on-line duplicate?

In general, the following types of vehicles are eligible for on-line duplicate registration orders:

Examples of vehicles for which you CANNOT get a duplicate on-line include:

See the list of eligible vehicle classes if you are not sure whether your vehicle qualifies.

If you have a vehicle which is not eligible for ordering on-line, you will have to get a duplicate either by mail or at a DMV office. For more information, see Replace Damaged, Lost or Stolen Registration Items in the DMV Registration and Title FAQs section.

My address has changed, can I get a duplicate on-line?

No, do not order a duplicate on-line if you have changed your address without notifying DMV.

If you change your address during a vehicle or driver license transaction, the change will not affect the address on your other DMV records. For example, if you changed your address when you renewed a vehicle registration, this did not change the address on your driver license record or on the registration records for other vehicles.

The DMV changes the address on both your driver license and your vehicle records only if you report the change on form MV-232 (Change of Address) or through the DMV Call Center. You must provide all of your vehicle plate numbers to change your address on all of the vehicle records.

Note: If you file a request with the US Postal Service (USPS) to forward mail there is no guarantee that the USPS will forward all DMV documents to the new address.

On-line duplicates are sent only to the address on file with DMV. You cannot change your address while getting a duplicate on-line, and duplicates cannot be re-directed via an e-mail request. If your address has changed, see the instructions for Replacing Registration Items by Mail.

Do NOT e-mail address change requests! - See Name or Address Change for instructions on changing your address at DMV.

I am temporarily living away from the address on my current registration, can I still get a duplicate on-line?

You may order a duplicate on-line if your mail will be accepted at the address on your current registration. If you need to have your registration mailed to a different address, follow these instructions to renew by mail.

My name has changed, can I get a duplicate on-line?

No, you should NOT get a duplicate on-line if you have changed your name without notifying DMV. Otherwise, your duplicate registration documents will be issued with the old name.

To change your name with DMV, you must bring supporting documentation to your local DMV office. You may also get a duplicate registration and update your license during that visit.

For more information, see Name or Address Change in the DMV FAQs section.

My registration has already expired (or is expiring very soon), can I get a duplicate on-line?

If your registration has already expired, you cannot order a duplicate on-line. See Replace Damaged, Lost or Stolen Registration Items for other ways to get a duplicate.

If your registration is due to expire within 60 days, you will be given the option to renew your registration instead of ordering a duplicate.

If your registration expires very soon (in less than a week or two), we suggest that you go to a local DMV office to renew your registration. This is the quickest way to get your window sticker and registration receipt stub.

PLEASE NOTE! - Be aware that getting a duplicate will NOT exempt you from having to renew your registration before it expires. You may be ticketed if your vehicle does not display a valid registration sticker.

My registration items were stolen or lost due to a crime, can I get a duplicate on-line?

If your registration items were stolen or lost due to a crime, you may order a duplicate on-line, however you must pay the $3 replacement fee. Items lost due to a crime may be replaced free of charge, but that must be done at a DMV office. See Replace Damaged, Lost or Stolen Registration Items for information on replacing your registration items if they were lost due to a crime.

Why do I need an order number?
 - How will I know if my transaction worked?
 - Will I get a receipt?

If your on-line duplicate is successful, then after a few moments you should see a confirmation page displaying an order number, the fee amount you were charged and other important information about your transaction. Alternatively, if we are unable to process your transaction, you will see an error message giving an explanation of the problem, along with instructions for resolving the error and an order number, if applicable.

In either case, you should write down your order number!

Remember... You will need your order number if you contact us about your transaction.

After your duplicate has been processed, we will attempt to send you an e-mail confirmation using the address you entered on the payment screen. This e-mail confirmation will also include your order number.

Note... Any confirmation you receive on-line or by e-mail is NOT a receipt and does NOT constitute legal proof of a valid registration. Your only receipt and proof of current registration is the receipt stub and window sticker that DMV will mail to you.

Can I order a duplicate registration if I have recently ordered one?

You cannot order a duplicate registration is you have already ordered one within the last ten days (on-line, by mail or at an office).

How do I get a replacement Inspection / Emission Sticker?

If you have replaced your windshield or your inspection sticker has been lost, mutilated or destroyed, you must get a replacement sticker. See the topic "How do I replace an inspection sticker?" for instructions.  Note! - Inspection stations do not issue replacement stickers.

How much does it cost to get a duplicate on-line?

The cost is $3.00 and is the same as for other methods of getting a duplicate registration. There is no additional charge for ordering a duplicate on-line.

How do I pay for my duplicate?

You must pay for your duplicate using one of the following credit cards: American Express Discover Card/Novus MasterCard VISA

DMV will also accept debit cards (check cards) issued by Visa® and MasterCard® if they do not require you to enter a PIN, or Personal Identification Number.

How will I know what amount was charged to my credit card?

You will be shown the duplicate document fee before you are asked to complete the transaction. The fee amount is also shown on the confirmation that you receive after submitting your order. Additionally, your credit card statement should identify a charge for "NYS DMV".

Is it safe to use my credit card on the Internet?

DMV uses SSL (secure socket layering), which is the industry standard for Internet commerce. It encrypts your credit card and personal information to ensure security of credit card transactions. Your credit card information will ALWAYS be encrypted during a DMV Internet Office Transaction. For more information, see the DMV Privacy and Security Statement.

How long will it take to get my duplicate registration?

Your duplicate will arrive by mail - allow up to 2 weeks, but most orders arrive in a week or less.

If you do not receive your duplicate registration documents, you may contact the DMV Call Center. You will be asked to provide your order number when you call.

Be aware that any confirmation you receive on-line or by e-mail does NOT constitute legal proof of a valid registration. The only legal proof of current registration is the receipt and window sticker that DMV will mail to you.

Can I cancel my on-line duplicate order?

No. Once a duplicate has been accepted by the DMV Internet Office, it cannot be canceled on-line.

What are the hours to order a duplicate on-line?

On-line duplicate registration is normally available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Most duplicates will be processed immediately.

However, for your convenience, some duplicate orders may be accepted and held for processing the next business day. This includes, but is not limited to, transactions conducted on weeknights between the hours of 8:00pm and 6:00am or on weekends. When this happens, your order confirmation will say "accepted." You can also check our on-line Order Status Lookup to verify when your transaction is processed. Once your duplicate has been fully processed, you will be sent a "processed" notification by e-mail.
