The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today announced that the State Senate has confirmed the appointment of Nancy A. Naples as Commissioner of the DMV, effective immediately. Commissioner Naples had served as Acting Commissioner since February.
"Today I have been afforded a tremendous opportunity to serve the residents of New York State as Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles," Commissioner Naples said. "I am grateful to Governor Pataki for this new opportunity and I look forward to working toward implementing initiatives that will make the Empire State's roads and highways even safer for everyone."
Commissioner Naples' experience includes service as Erie County Comptroller from 1994 through 2005, overseeing a $1.1 billion budget for New York's second largest county. Previous to her election as Comptroller, she served as Vice President of Finance and Operations to Joseph J. Naples & Associates, a surety bonds, workers' compensation and insurance agency. She has also worked as Vice President of HSBC, Merrill Lynch & Co., and as an Assistant Vice President of the former Chemical Bank.
Actively involved in community service, Commissioner Naples is the past-president of the Roswell Park Foundation Board and a founding member of the Roswell Park Alliance. She serves as a member of the board of trustees for Canisius College and the Buffalo Inner-City Scholarship Fund (BISON Fund) and previously served as a trustee for Nardin Academy in Buffalo and as an ex-officio Director of the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy/Albright Knox Art Gallery. She was the first woman President of the One Hundred Club of Buffalo and Western New York, an organization that assists families of police, firefighters, and emergency service workers killed or injured in the line of duty. Commissioner Naples also serves on the Executive Committee of the New York State Division for Women WNY Advisory Council and is a member of the Western New York Chapter of the Business and Professional Women USA.
Commissioner Naples is a graduate of Marymount College and earned her MBA from Pace University. She is married to Thomas H. O'Neill, Jr.
