Requirements:
- Your browser must be set to allow cookies.
- You may personalize your plates with up to 8 characters (6 on motorcycle) and choose spacing and optional placement of the state image. See these guidelines.
- Available for passenger, commercial and motorcycle classes. You must have an existing, valid NYS vehicle registration to order. Anyone may look up plates.
- Personalized Empire plates are $43 for passenger and commercial vehicles, with an annual fee of $25. Motorcycle plates are $25.50 initially, with an annual fee of $15. This fee is in addition to your vehicle registration fee.
- You must provide a valid e-mail address so we can send you a confirmation. A protected or blocked e-mail address, including spam blocking software, may prevent you from receiving your confirmation e-mail. Your e-mail program must be able to receive e-mail from addresses that include the domain: dmv.state.ny.us.

Limitations:
- You cannot order personal plates and have them sent to an address different from the one already on record for the registration. -- Plates are sent to the address on DMV's file. E-mail requests for address changes are NOT accepted.
- You cannot order personal plates on-line if your registration will expire within 60 days. Call the Custom Plates Unit (1-518-402-4838) to order your plates and have your registration renewed. More on this topic.
- Personal plates with the handicap symbol cannot be ordered on line, please call the Custom Plates Unit.
- There are restrictions on what can appear on a plate. All plates are screened by DMV before delivery. Obscene or objectionable plates are not issued, nor are plates that may give the appearance of an official plate or are in the configuration of special registration classes.
