There is one application form for both your first learner permit and your first driver license. You must pay the application fees when you visit a DMV office to complete the application. The DMV creates a digital image of your photo and your signature, and keeps the images for future use.

The DMV issues an original driver license that is valid for a maximum of five years. The time period of your original driver license and the total fees depend on your exact age on the date of your application. NYS law requires the DMV to calculate the fee according to each period of six months that your original driver license is valid.

The following chart lists the total fees for an original learner permit and an original driver license in each license class. The total fees listed include the $10 photo document fee.

The chart does not include any renewal fees, fees to change a license class, or fees for a duplicate driver license. The fees for commercial driver licenses (Class A, Class B, Class C) are more. A part of the fee for a motorcycle license (Class M, Class MJ) supports the Motorcycle Safety Program in NYS.
