FAQs About the Requirements, Eligibility and the Restrictions for this Transaction

What information and documents do I need to do this transaction on-line?

To use this transaction, your web browser must permit cookies.

To plead on-line to traffic tickets and schedule hearings, or to pay traffic tickets online, you must have the following items or information:

What options can I select for a traffic ticket during this transaction?

If available for a specific ticket, the options listed below are the options you can select during this transaction. Not all options are available for all tickets.

Enter a Plea

If you did not yet enter a plea on the traffic ticket, you can submit a plea.

Pleas of Guilty:

If you plead Guilty, you must pay the fines, the fees, and the surcharges that result from the plea of Guilty.

You cannot plead Guilty on-line if the conviction will result in suspension or revocation of your driver license. You are required to appear at a TVB office.

Pleas of Not Guilty:

If you plead Not Guilty, you must schedule a hearing at the TVB office in the jurisdiction where the ticket was issued. When you submit the Not Guilty plea on-line, the transaction immediately sets the earliest available date for the hearing. If other dates are available, you can later select a different date for the hearing.

If no hearing dates are available at the time you submit your plea, you will receive a message that no dates are available. The DMV will accept your Not Guilty plea and select a hearing date. Within five business days, you can return to the transaction to see the date and time of your hearing. Also see the instructions under "Re-schedule a Not Guilty Hearing" below.

If you fail to appear for your hearing, a default conviction can be entered, additional penalties can be imposed, and your driver license will be suspended.

You cannot plead Not Guilty if your driver license or driving privilege is suspended for failure to answer the ticket.

Make Payments for Previous Convictions/Suspensions

If the traffic ticket has previously resulted in a conviction or a driver license suspension for failure to answer the ticket, you can pay the fines, the fees, and the surcharges that resulted from the conviction and/or suspension.

Change an Earlier Not Guilty Plea to a Guilty Plea.

If you previously entered a plea of Not Guilty to the traffic ticket, you can change your Plea to Guilty. If you plead Guilty, you must pay all required fines, fees and surcharges related to the traffic ticket. You cannot make a partial payment or pay later.

You cannot plead Guilty on-line if the conviction will result in suspension or revocation of your driver license. You are required to appear at a TVB office.

Re-schedule a Not Guilty Hearing (One Time)

Once you use the transaction to select or accept the date and time for a Not Guilty plea hearing, you can return to the transaction one time to select a different date and time if other dates and times are available. If you have selected a different date on-line once, or no other dates or times were available, you must contact the TVB to re-schedule your hearing.

When you return to the transaction to check for other hearing dates and times:

Take No Action Now

You are not required to plead to or pay every traffic ticket that is displayed, but if you select "Take No Action Now" for a ticket or a payment, a default conviction, additional penalties and a driver license suspension can result or remain in effect.

Notification for a Ticket that is Not Yet on File

If the traffic ticket number you enter is not currently listed on the DMV traffic ticket files, you can request that the DMV send you an e-mail notification when the ticket is entered on the files. You will also be notified if the ticket is not entered on the files after a specified period of time.

Can I do this transaction on-line if my address changed?

Yes, but if you plead Not Guilty to one or more traffic tickets, you are required to provide information about a new address so the DMV can send you a Notice of Hearing in the mail.

If you update your address for a Notice of Hearing in this transaction, the update does not affect your address on your DMV driver license or vehicle records.  Read the instructions to change your address on DMV documents and records.

Can I do this transaction on-line if I changed my name?

Yes, but if you plead Not Guilty to one or more traffic tickets, the DMV Notice of Hearing will be mailed using your previous name.

Read the instructions to change your name on DMV documents and records.

How can I determine the status of my driver license, learner permit or driving privileges?

If, as a result of this transaction, the DMV terminates a suspension of your driver license for failure to answer a ticket or pay the fines, fees or surcharges required, this does not guarantee that you have a valid driver license, learner permit or driving privileges in NYS. There can be suspensions or revocations for other reasons.

To determine the status of your driver license, learner permit or driving privileges, you can order your driver abstract.

You need your Confirmation Number if you contact the DMV about your on-line transaction. After you complete the transaction, you will see a confirmation page in your browser window. The confirmation page displays your Confirmation Number and other information about your transaction.

Do not try to print or to reload the confirmation page until you first record the confirmation number. Some browsers can erase your transaction information from the page if you try to print or to reload this page.

The confirmation page can take several seconds to appear. If the confirmation page does not appear immediately, do not select the button to submit your payment again. If you select the button more than one time, you can receive an error message. Wait for the confirmation page to appear.

Your Confirmation Number also appears in the e-mail confirmation message that you will receive after you submit your payment.

Can I cancel this transaction?

No. After you select the button to verify the selections you made, or the button that displays the words "Submit My Payment," your transaction is processed. You cannot cancel the transaction after you verify your selections or submit your payment.
