FAQs About the Requirements, Restrictions, and Eligibility for this Transaction

What is a driver responsibility assessment and what is the amount of the assessment?

To get more information about driver responsibility assessments, read the FAQs about the Driver Responsibility Program.

What information and documents do I need to complete this on-line transaction?

To pay a driver responsibility assessment on-line, your web browser must permit cookies.

To pay a driver responsibility assessment on-line, you must have these items or this information:

Can I use this on-line transaction if I changed my mailing address?

Yes, but if you need to replace your driver license or your learner permit, the DMV must have your current mailing address. For example, if you are eligible to receive a duplicate driver license after the DMV closes a suspension on your driver record, the DMV will send your photo document to the mailing address listed on your driver record. If you do not receive your photo document, you must apply for another duplicate photo document and pay another fee for the duplicate.

If you change your address during a vehicle or driver license transaction, the change will not affect the address on your other DMV records. For example, if you changed your address when you renewed a vehicle registration, this did not change the address on your driver license record or on the registration records for other vehicles.

The DMV changes the address on both your driver license and your vehicle records only if you report the change on form MV-232 (Change of Address) or through the DMV Call Center. You must provide all of your vehicle plate numbers to change your address on all of the vehicle records.

Note: If you file a request with the US Postal Service (USPS) to forward mail there is no guarantee that the USPS will forward all DMV documents to the new address.

If the DMV does not have your current mailing address on your DMV records, read the instructions to change your address on DMV documents.

Can I use this on-line transaction if I changed my name?

Yes, but if you need to replace your driver license or your learner permit, the DMV must have your current name. For example, if you are eligible to receive a duplicate driver license after the DMV closes a suspension on your driver record, the duplicate driver license will display your previous name. If you recently changed your name, read the instructions to change your name on DMV documents and DMV records.

Can I pay less than the minimum amount of the annual driver responsibility assessment and then pay the balance in the future?

No. You must pay the minimum amount that appears on your statement in 30 days or less.

Can I pay the three annual driver responsibility assessments in one year instead of three years?

Yes. Normally, you receive three annual statements for each assessment. When you receive the first annual assessment statement, you can pay the annual assessment, or you can pay the total assessment that remains for the three years. When you receive the second annual assessment statement, you can pay the annual assessment or the total assessment for the two years that remain.

You can also pay the total balance of assessments that remains at any time. For example, you have a total assessment of $300, and you pay the minimum payment of $100 due from your first annual statement. You can pay the $200 balance at any time. You do not need to wait until you receive the second annual statement.

There is an exception if there are additional assessments for additional incidents and you have not yet received an annual statement that includes the additional assessments. To pay your DRA balance in this situation, you must pay the amount of the additional assessments as well as the balance of the initial assessment. For example, your initial total assessment is $300. You you pay the $100 due on the first annual statement. Your balance is $200, but an additional total assessment of $150 is added to your DRA account after you paid the $100 annual assessment. You cannot pay the $200 blance on the initial assessment unless you also pay the $150 balance of the additional assessment. To pay your total DRA balance, you would have to pay $350.

You will be informed that there are additional assessments if you attempt to pay the balance of an initial assessment that does not include the additional assessments.

You are not required to pay the balance of assessments before you receive the annual statements. You can pay the annual assessment each year for three years until the balance is paid. If you do pay the balance, you will not receive future annual statements for assessments included in that balance.

FAQs about Hours, Payment, and Other General Information for this Transaction

Is this on-line transaction always available?  What are the business hours for this on-line transaction?

This transaction is normally available 24 hours each day.

The DMV normally processes on-line transactions immediately. If the DMV cannot immediately process your transaction, you will receive a confirmation that the DMV received the information that you entered. The DMV will process your transaction on the next business day, and will send an e-mail message to confirm your transaction.

Does the DMV charge a fee to use this on-line transaction?

There is no cost or processing fee to use this on-line transaction. You pay only the amount of your assessment.

How do I pay for this on-line transaction?

You must use a credit card or a debit card to pay for this transaction on-line. The DMV accepts these credit cards:

American Express Card Discover Card MasterCard VISA Card

You can use a debit card if the debit card was issued by MasterCard® or VISA® and the card does not require a personal identification number (PIN).

Is this on-line transaction secure? How does the DMV protect my personal information?

The DMV uses secure socket layering (SSL) to protect your information. The DMV encrypts your credit card information and your personal information so other Internet users cannot read the information. Read the DMV Privacy and Security Statement.

How will I know the amount that the DMV charged to my credit card?

The on-line transaction will ask you to confirm the amount of your payment before you submit your payment. If you do not submit your payment, the DMV will not charge the amount to your credit card.

After the DMV processes your payment, you will see the amount of the payment in the confirmation messages from the DMV and on your credit card statement.

Why do I need a confirmation number?
How will I know if the DMV processed my transaction?
Will I receive a receipt or other proof that the DMV processed my transaction?

You will need your confirmation number if you contact the DMV about your on-line transaction. After you select the button to submit your payment, a confirmation message will appear in your browser window. The confirmation message contains your confirmation number and other information about your transaction.

The confirmation message can take several seconds to appear. If the message does not appear immediately, do not select the button to submit your payment again. If you select the button more than one time, you can receive an error message. Wait for the message to appear.

When the confirmation message appears in your browser window, write your confirmation number on a piece of paper. Do not try to print or to reload the web page in your browser window. Some browsers will erase the information from the web page if you try to print or to reload the page, and you can lose your transaction information.

After you submit your payment, you will receive an e-mail message that includes your confirmation number.

Can I cancel this on-line transaction?

No. You cannot cancel this on-line transaction after you submit your payment.

How can I check the status of my driver license or my driving privileges? How can I get a driver license or a learner permit (NYS photo document)?

If you paid your driver responsibility assessment and the DMV did not suspend your driver license, your driving privileges are not affected. You can request your driver abstract on-line.

If your driver license is suspended because you did not pay an assessment, the DMV will close the suspension immediately after your payment is processed. Your payment does not guarantee that the DMV will completely restore your driving privileges. A confirmation message from this on-line transaction is not proof that your driving privileges are valid. Your payment does not close the other suspensions or revocations on your driver record. You must determine that the DMV restored your driving privileges before you drive a motor vehicle.
